La Première ministre néo-zélandaise Jacinda Ardern a reconnu qu’il existe des divergences avec la Chine sur les droits de l’homme, à un moment où son gouvernement est critiqué pour ne pas avoir adopté une position assez ferme sur Pékin à cet égard.
Dans un discours qu’elle a prononcé à Auckland lors d’un sommet économique avec la Chine, Ardern a confirmé que son pays avait informé Pékin de ses «graves préoccupations» concernant l’effondrement des libertés démocratiques à Hong Kong et la manière dont la minorité ouïghoure du Xinjiang est traité.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has acknowledged that there are differences with China on human rights, at a time when her government is being criticized for not taking a strong enough stance on Beijing in this regard.
In a speech in Auckland at an economic summit with China, Ardern confirmed that her country had informed Beijing of its “grave concerns” about the collapse of democratic freedoms in Hong Kong and the treatment of the Uighur minority in Xinjiang.
But the center-left Prime Minister said New Zealand is independent in foreign policy and is, therefore, free to choose whether to discuss these issues in public or in private meetings with Chinese leaders.
It also acknowledged that China and New Zealand would never agree on some issues.
She said, “No one here has forgotten that with China’s growing and developing role in the world, resolving the differences between our two systems … is becoming increasingly difficult.”
She stressed, “This is a challenge that we and many other countries face in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, as well as in Europe and other regions.”
“We have to admit that there are hundreds of things that China and New Zealand don’t agree on, and they can’t agree and won’t agree,” she said, adding that “this should not harm our relationship, it’s just a fact.”
New Zealand Foreign Minister Nanaya Mahota recently opined that Wellington (New Zealand’s capital) would not allow the “Five Eyes” intelligence coalition, which includes Australia, New Zealand, Britain, the United States, and Canada, to dictate policy with China, its largest trading partner.
The flashpoints between Canberra, Australia, and Beijing have been steadily escalating since 2018 due to disagreements over a growing number of issues, from the fifth generation of the Internet to accusations of espionage in Hong Kong, and even the source of the Coronavirus.

Elle a dit: “Personne ici n’a oublié qu’avec le rôle croissant et en développement de la Chine dans le monde, le règlement des différences entre nos deux systèmes … devient de plus en plus difficile.”
Elle a souligné: “C’est un défi auquel nous et de nombreux autres pays sommes confrontés dans les océans Indien et Pacifique, ainsi qu’en Europe et dans d’autres régions.”
“Nous devons admettre qu’il y a des centaines de choses sur lesquelles la Chine et la Nouvelle-Zélande ne sont pas d’accord, et elles ne peuvent pas s’entendre et ne seront pas d’accord”, a-t-elle déclaré, ajoutant que “cela ne devrait pas nuire à nos relations, c’est simplement un fait.”
Le ministre néo-zélandais des Affaires étrangères, Nanaya Mahota, a récemment estimé que Wellington (la capitale de la Nouvelle-Zélande) ne permettrait pas à la coalition de renseignement «Five Eyes» (Five Eyes) qui comprend l’Australie, la Nouvelle-Zélande, la Grande-Bretagne, les États-Unis et le Canada, de dicter sa politique avec la Chine, son principal partenaire commercial.
Les points de tension entre Canberra (Australie) et Pékin ne cessent de s’intensifier depuis 2018 en raison de désaccords sur un nombre croissant de sujets, de la cinquième génération d’Internet, aux accusations d’espionnage, en passant par Hong Kong, et même à la source du virus Corona.
