Bangladeshi police said at least 26 people were killed and several others were missing Saturday after an overcrowded speedboat collided with a sand-laden tanker and sank in the giant Padma River.
Mirage Hussain, a senior police official in the central Madaripur region where the accident occurred, said rescuers had found 26 bodies and some may still be missing.
He added that five people were rescued and taken to hospital.
Hundreds of people die every year in ferry accidents in Bangladesh, a country with vast inland waterways and lax safety standards.
